Before painting this image, Quandt prepared the paper front and back with a white ground such as glue or gesso, allowing for a smoother, less porous surface. She then taped off a 7" by 7" square of the prepared surface and painted the abstract scene - a still life that almost appears to be a landscape- in watercolor. This was then washed in a mica-flecked transparent paint, further lending a soft veil of obscurity to the image.
