Description
Executed for the wartime volume issued by Random House in 1944, this is one of several novels Eichenberg illustrated. He was drawn to the works of authors whose works meditated on the drama of the human condition: Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, the Brontes, Grimmelhausen, Poe, etc. Here, his signature exaggeration of features, made stark with the use of heavy contrast, compliments Poe's style. Each finely detailed illustration, within a relatively small format, carries its own impact. Between four and ten unnumbered proofs were pulled for each woodengraving.
