Lewis Daniel Johnson worked in Pasadena, California as a newspaper columnist and caricaturist. This pencil and charcoal drawing of a German Shepherd was probably done about 1935, perhaps as a commission by the dog's owner. Johnson signed the drawing in the lower right with a pencil.
As a young man Johnson had traveled as an artist with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, probably doing caricatures of the acts and perhaps the audience members. It was here he honed his drawing skills.
