Description
This proof impression is not noted in Black and Moorehead. 1/2" of the plate was not printed at the far left where the plate appears to run off into infinity. There are slight printing creases within the image.
"Defeat" is one of 5 prints created as a commission for Ambrose Vollard to accompany the text of Numancia by Cervantes. The project ended with Vollard's death. A proof in the British Museum is inscribed: 'Movement of Flight - figures supporting corpse, figures animals movement - forms of flame, etc.'
This impression is from the collection of Atelier 17 artist Fred Becker, a close friend of Hayter's.
