Description

This impression of "Falling Figure" is from the estate of printmaker Fred Becker, who assisted Hayter with the printing of the edition at Atelier 17 in New York in 1947. This impression is dedicated by Hayter 'For Fred'.

"Falling Figure" was done in 4 states: first and second were engraving; state 3 added soft-ground textures and 4 silkscreens and the 4th added the scorper to acheive the three dimensional elements.

The printing record for the final state reads: "intaglio black, blue silkscreen on to plate; green silkscreen on to plate; red silkscreen on to plate; yellow silkscreen on to plate and red-violet silkscreen on to plate. Impressions vary from impression to impression.

The color trial proofs were exhibited in the Brooklyn Museum in 1948. The plate is in the collection of the City Museum of St. Louis, Missouri.

This is one of at least 26 progressive color trial proofs, printed on Van Gelder paper of which 10 were printed with black and two colors, such as this 'green-red'.

This impression is in very good condition with slight printing related creases within the image. The lower left corner margin is torn, far from the platemark, there are margin creases, also far from the platemark.
