Paul Hultberg borrows from the traditional folkloric styles and Mexican Modernism he was exposed to during his time in Mexico, working with muralists Jose Gutierrez and Alfaro Siquieros, among others. This is a very early painting, possibly created as a study for future murals. Rich, jewel tones enliven this minimalist portrayal of a seated nude, hand pulling her hair back as she meets the gaze of the viewer with a direct expression. Another model sits cross legged in the background; both faces are somber.
