This image is often considered the first of the Sosaku Hanga school, a style and movement in which the artist executes all aspects of the woodblock print: design, carving, and printing. Gyofu (Fisherman) Woodcut, 1960, sealed Kanae, paper slip affixed to verso typed in English with title Fisherman, artist's name, dated in ink 1904, memorial edition 1960, printed by Hashimoto Okiie 12.5/8 x 10in. (32 x 27.3cm.) In 1960 Hashimoto Okiie (1899-1993) produced a small edition of 40 prints from Yamamoto's original 1904 blocks.
