Willard Nash studied the work of French painter Paul Cezanne and had an interest in Cubism. Nash lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1921 where, as a painter, he was a member of the 'Los Cinco Pintores' who were experimenting with avant-garde compositions. He left Santa Fe in 1936.
Nash did many lithographs of the Santa Fe region, its architecture and landscape. They were generally done in editions of 20 impressions but were not met with great financial success. As a result much of his graphic work has not come forward and is rare.
This Santa Fe street scene is dedicated by Nash "For the Mackey's with my best wishes - Willard". The recipient was the California artist Eric Spencer Mackey (1880-1958) and his family. This impression is also annotated "imp" after the signature, indicating that the artist printed it himself.
