Kevin Fletcher’s work often confronts the impact of Western society’s hunger for growth, juxtaposing the glint of the American dream against the dark beauty found in industrial decay. Here, he grapples with the fallout of strip mining’s excess found throughout the eastern half of the U.S. From its demolition of towering natural features to the chemical runoff pervading mountain streams, the destruction that is wrought in Fletcher’s “Strip Mining Dream…” is complex, messy, and truthful, a tangled manmade web watched over by the stars.
