Donald Ferguson developed his monoprint technique through a course he took at the Los Angeles Community College under Norman Schwab. Having worked in primarily in painting and collage prior to his time at the college, Ferguson found that the monoprint (or monotype) essentially synthesized those two mediums with the added element of impressing the imagery into a sheet of paper, creating a kind of depth not achieved with other matrix-based mediums. Here, the artist uses earth tones and carefully planned spacing of shapes and textures to create a warm, elegant abstract composition.
Schwab would later say of his former pupil, "Ferguson paints with the etching press." Ferguson continues to work and exhibit in Southern California.
