Werner Drewes’ exemplary, small-format intaglio “Reaching to the Moon” features the hallmarks of a pioneer of style and technique in mid-century printmaking: the ease with which he explores line and shape without the need for strict representation; the combination of sharp, angular texture overlaid with liquid forms; and a keen, balanced sense of composition. Drewes borrows from ancient Greek artisans in this depiction of an animal-like figure, winged, looking up at the night sky, and in doing so this 6” x 4” print becomes a small mythical tale unto itself.
