Description
In classic Cubist style, Werner Drewes depicts three nude figures at the seaside, a sailboat and setting sun in the distance. Working in the same precise manner in which he portrays cityscapes, Drewes breaks up light and shadow in rhythmic blocks, breaking up the near-rigidity with the curving lines of organic forms - in this case, the human body. Though his artistic career took root in representational imagery, Drewes found great inspiration in the abstract work he was surrounded by on his arrival in New York in 1930, and he quickly adapted to this new world of expression. “Sunset,” with its balance between figural and abstract genres and it’s vibrant, energetic composition, illustrates Drewes path toward non-representational imagery, as well as his enjoyment of the process.
