While not certain of the exact reference of the artist's title, Shantung is a province of Northeast China, on the Yellow Sea and the gulf of Chihli. It was part of the earliest organzied state of China. The province is located on the eastern edge of the North China plain and extends out to sea in the form of the Shandong Peninsula.
