A feature of Edmond Casarella’s work is his ability to switch between delicate and bold imagery with equal strength and balance; whether working in large, commanding shapes and color to convey a stone wall or coaxing forth an abstract dance using the thinnest, sharpest collection of lines, each piece is pleasingly mapped out on the sheet.
In “Recurring Thoughts” he’s taken the latter approach in a monochromatic palette, using a blank aluminum recording disc and incorporating the direction in which he’s wiped the ink to give the shape a rounded dimensionality. Etched lines and minute circles appear to cluster together within a transparent globe, as if capturing sparks of electricity and light spots seen in negative - a visual illustration of those thoughts that appear, unbidden, like small mysteries throughout our days.
