Description
This color lithograph is the result of a series of drawings Baxter made of Italian laundresses. He was captivated by the elegance of their movements while doing the repetitious job of tending laundry.
The artist views his subject from the back and above, looking down at the ironing board as she irons the laundry, the vertabrae of her neck straining with years of repetitive motion. The image is bathed in a dark red light.
