Description
Joseph Pennell despicts the Hudson Avenue power plant, built by Consolidated Edison Co., resting at the edge of the lower East River with the Manhattan Bridge in the midground and the silhouette of the Woolworth's building in the background. The plant provided electricity to Brooklyn and Queens, and steam to Manhattan for heating and hot water - the largest commercial steam system in the United States at the time. The plant was fully shuttered in 2011. Pennell was commissioned to create this image by the Brooklyn Edison Co. upon completion of the building's renovations, though it wasn't finalized until 1924.
