Description
A view of a narrow alleyway in Nepal, with a low sun casting the street in shadow contrasted by a bright sky. A sense of quietude and stillness comes through this small-format engraving, illustrating Richard Wagener's keen ability to synthesize the drama of atmosphere with economy of line.

Richard Wagener grew up in southern California, spending time with his grandfather in remote parts of the desert and up in the Sierra mountain range. Early art classes introduced him to Maynard Dixon and Edgar Payne. After-school activities included selling the evening newspapers at the Disney studios, where he met many of the illustrators and animators. Richard has an undergraduate degree from the University of San Diego and a graduate degree from Art Center College of Design, and has been engraving wood for over thirty years. His work is included in a number of fine press editions, most notably with Peter Koch in Berkeley and the Book Club of California, and in 2006 Richard established his own imprint Mixolydian Editions. He currently lives and works in northern California. Of note in regards to his woodengraving technique is his exclusive use of single-line as opposed to multiple-line carving tools, meaning that each line is carved individually.
