Spitsbergen Island is located in Norway, the largest and only permanently inhabited island of the northern Svalbard archipelago.

Of note in regards to Wagener's woodengraving technique is his exclusive use of single-line as opposed to multiple-line carving tools, meaning that each line, in its delicate uniformity, is carved individually.
