Richard Wagener's woodengraving, done in 2020, is a Red-Tailed Hawk. The hawk is depicted in flight, sailing on an updraft, surveying its surrounding. This image is one of a series of woodengravings Wagener produced for the 2021 book Cascadia on the Pacific Northwest. Like all of his work, all the lines are individually engraved into the end-grain, not with a multiple line tool.
The feathers of the Red-tailed Hawk are considered sacred to many Native Americans and, like the feathers of the Eagle, are sometimes used in religious ceremonies and rituals. For additional information refer to Power Animals. Red-tailed Hawk feathers adorned the regalia of many Native Americans including headdresses.
Among Native Americans, the Red-tailed Hawk birth sign falls between March 21 and April 19. People born under the Hawk are reputed to have keen vision, boldness, and tenacity in pursuit of their goal. Others look to them as a problem solver with great insight.
