Leon Kroll dedicated this lithograph to his friend and colleague Mary Lewis Hall (1910-1986) and might well be her portrait.
Mary Lewis (Hall) Carey was raised in Washington, DC, and attended the Holton Arms School. She studied painting at the National Academy of Design in New York City. She specialized in portraits, and her portrait of Baltimore mayor Thomas D'Alesandro II hangs in City Hall. She also has works at the Johns Hopkins University, Sheppard Pratt Hospital, the Maryland Club, the Gilman School, and elsewhere.
In 1956, she and Leon Kroll completed a mural in Shriver Hall on the Homewood Campus of the Johns Hopkins University. Her works have also been exhibited at the Baltimore Museum of Art (1944) and the Hilltop Theater Art Gallery (1958), as well as the Corcoran and Phillips galleries in Washington.
