Description
This impression, no. 2, is one of fourteen intaglio prints of the Station of the Cross produced in 1957 and 1958. They are called ''mixed technique'' intaglios because the artist used several different etching techniques including; aquatint, drypoint, etching, engraving, and softground. Swift illustrates the story of the Stations as a drama, instilled with references to the injustices and sufferings in the 20th century. In this impression Swift's iconography is showcased in his first two monstrous figures of evil, one on either side of Christ. The first is a bird headed man hidden in the shadows behind Christ. The double horned Minotaur which represents inhumanity is standing to his other side and will haunt Christ through many of the following impressions.
