Description
According to Landeck, this the 14th Street stop of the Lexington Avenue Line of the Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT). The New York Subway was privately owned and operated by the IRT when it opened in 1904. In June 1940, New York City purchased the IRT. Besides the modernist approach to the subject the scene is particularly eerie because there are only two people on the platform waiting for trains. One is rendered in black as if it is only a shadow while the other person's identity remains hidden behind a newspaper.
