California born Alice Geneva Glasier married writer Phillips Kloss and shortened her name, adopting the masculine form of her middle name so that her work would be viewed with an unprejudiced eye and entry into exhibitions would not be denied her. The Klosses moved permanently to Taos, New Mexico in 1945.
Gene Kloss, like so many artists who settled in New Mexico, returned over and over to the landscape for her inspiration as she did with "High in the Rockies", a 'portrait' of a mountain range in winter.
