Description
Thrall developed a fascination with text and calligraphy during the urban renewal of Milwaukee in the 1950s, attributing the layers of exposed graffiti and old signs and murals to his incorporation of characters and numbers to his art. It wasn't long after his introduction to printmaking in 1960 that he traveled to New York and Washington D.C. on a Louis Comfort Tiffany graphics grant, studying the penmanship of ancient manuscripts. Elements of calligraphy and type are a common theme in his work.
