Description
Doris Chatham was already a student of the Abstract Expressionist movement when she arrived in France to study at Atelier 17. The rise of printmaking as an artistic medium had gained great momentum in the years that Atelier 17 had been situated in the United States. Chatham's "Suspension" envelopes the energetic color and form of mid-century abstraction and the gestural movement that Hayter was exploring in Paris at that time.
