Description
From a sixteen image series titled "Scenes of the Life of the Virgin Mary," commonly considered a complimentary cycle with that of the Life of Christ. The number of images typically depicted by artists of the early 17th century varied greatly, from seven to 53. In the case of the Scenes of the Life of the Virgin Mary, the sixteen images and frontipieces were drawn by Ioannes Stradanus, and fifteen of those were then translated into woodengravings by Adrian Collaert, the last two by Adrian's son (also named Ioannes).
