"Night in Chicago" was commissioned by the Chicago Society of Etchers in 1940 as their 31st publication. The image was printed in an edition of 325 impressions. This image is illustrated on the cover of Cedar Rapids Museum of Art catalog raisonné "James Swann In Quest of a Printmaker."
Swann depict the Chicago skyline at night, in the rain. He frames the city between two dark shapes, a barren tree on the left and a building on the right. Streetlights glow through the dark and a beacon projects into the night sky from the top of a skyscaper in the distance.
