This woodcut of the North Dakota Prairies was done by California printmaker Gordon Morthensen using a method of printing that he has become the master of. The "reduction" woodcut involves cutting a single block, printing the color for the image for the whole edition before cutting away more for the second color, more for the third and so on. There is no reprinting of a reduction block. "North Dakota Prairies required 27 cuttings and 35 impressions from the block to achieve the final image you see.
